About us
Morija Sesotho Book Depot (MSBD), founded in 1862, is a historic publishing house in Morija, Lesotho, that has played a crucial role in promoting literacy and preserving Sesotho language, culture, and heritage. It began as part of the Morija Mission Station established by the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society (PEMS) in 1833. MSBD initially focused on religious materials, like the Bible and hymnals, to support the mission’s educational and religious work, and it quickly became one of the earliest institutions to produce books in the Sesotho language.
As literacy rates rose in Lesotho, the depot expanded its catalog, including educational texts, novels, poetry, historical accounts, and cultural studies. It has published influential works, such asĀ Moshoeshoe le Baruti, and Mehla ea Malimo, covering the history of the Basotho people and the legacy of the founder of Lesotho, King Moshoeshoe I.
